SAFE has been operating for over 70 years. It was founded in 1940 in North Highlands, California, when it was originally chartered under the name of Sacramento Air Depot (S.A.D.) Federal Credit Union. After its first year of operation, the credit union had a total of  275 members and assets of $7,000. Luckily its name was eventually changed from SAD to SAFE, which stands for the Sacramento Air Force Employees Federal Credit Union.

Today, SAFE Credit Union has reached a membership of more than 150,000 people and has over $1.6 billion in assets.
