This online Library Science degree program prepares students with the skills needed to work in academic, public and special libraries. Students acquire these competencies through coursework in library science, literature and technology. The Library Science degree prepares also students for graduate work in American Library Association-accredited programs.
The evolving global information society makes library science professionals more important than ever. Librarians strengthen the link among individuals, information and technology. The changing nature of skills required for 21st century public, academic and special libraries has created high demand for well-educated, credentialed, community-wise and digitally-skilled information professionals. The Library Science, BS Ed program was designed by the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s College of Education. Students who complete this program will have a Library Science major and choice of a minor that allows candidates to build on a second body of expertise.

Erica Rose Instructor
With over 20 years experience in libraries, Erica Rose is passionate about developing 21st century librarians. Her teaching interests include leadership and management, children’s and young adult literature, technology in the libraries and library practicum.
To be accepted to this program, you must have:
2.50 GPA or above on a 4.0 scale
Students should have a two-year associate’s degree from an accredited institution plus a high school diploma or GED. Request information or call to speak with an adviser about transfer credit or meeting these prerequisites.

Courses You’ll Take
Course Number: TED 4570
This three credit hour supervised practicum is designed to give librarians an overview of the public services, technical services, and leadership and management of libraries and information agencies. Prereq: Minimum 24 hours of library science coursework and permission of adviser. (Application deadline February 1 for Fall practicum; October 1 for Spring practicum)
Teaching Learning in Digital Environments
Course Number: TED 4590
This course introduces technology and technical literacies required of educators and information specialists in 21st Century libraries and classrooms. Course topics include information literacy, instructional design in digital environments, Web page design and construction, social networking and learning, and academic integrity.
Young Adult Literature and Education
Course Number: TED 4660
Explores story, poetry, drama, and informational materials for young adults. Examines current issues, recent materials, and the theoretical and research base of this field to develop meaningful and creative learning, literacy, and library experiences. Literacy resources and activities for students in middle and high school.
Reference Resources and Services
Course Number: TED 4710
Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the theories, concepts and activities integral to reference resources and services in 21st Century libraries and information agencies. Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of effective search strategies and efficient use of both print and digital resources, design and promote information literacy instruction that is developmentally appropriate, and understand the legal and ethical responsibilities integral to positive and proactive reference services for patrons and diverse learners.
Organization of Information
Course Number: TED 4740
A basic course in cataloging and classification. Course content and laboratory work is designed to engage candidates in descriptive and subject cataloging procedures proscribed by the American Library Association and the Library of Congress. Introduction to basic cataloging and classification principles and procedures, AACRIIR standards, and records in MARC format.
Advanced Cataloging and Classification
Course Number: TED 4750
Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the theories, concepts and activities of descriptive and subject cataloging of non-book materials (including serials and digital resources) in 21st Centry libraries and information agencies using the Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal classification schemes and Library of Congress subject headings. Prereq: TED 4740
Managing Collections in Libraries Information Agencies
Course Number: TED 4760
Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the theories, concepts and activities integral to proactive collection management in 21st Century libraries and information agencies. Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of community analysis, collection analysis, and the ability to conduct critical evaluations of a diverse array of information resources.
Leadership Management in Libraries Management in Library Information Agencies
Course Number: TED 4800
Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the theories, concepts and activities integral to leading and managing 21st Century libraries and information agencies. Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of leadership principles and management strategies that engage policies and procedures that support the personal, academic and professional needs for patrons and diverse learners.
