PUTTING THE “C” IN “CAREER”
Chip LeDuff earned one “C” in his entire SFA education. It was in a maternal course in the School of Nursing. However, his SFA instructors never allowed him to feel discouraged. Chip turned his maternal and pediatric experiences in clinicals and in the simulation lab into a neonatal nursing career. He earned a Master of Science in Nursing as a neonatal nurse practitioner at Duke University and will complete the Doctor of Nursing Practice at Duke in 2018.

Inspired to Serve
Tim Hernandez has made a career of helping others. Prior to attending SFA, Tim worked in prehospital emergency services, assisted with rescue and evacuation during Hurricane Katrina, and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a combat medic in Iraq – all in an effort to serve others.Tim earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from SFA in December 2017. He credits the SFA faculty with preparing students to not only perform but to excel in real-world environments.

SMALL CLASSES MAKE A BIG IMPACT
Anne James credits her small classes at SFA for her success as a registered nurse. More than a decade after graduating from SFA, she still remembers fondly the one-on-one attention she received from SFA faculty members like Dr. Sara Bishop. The encouragement from Anne’s professors in the School of Nursing helped her persevere even when her courses grew challenging. She also discovered her love for labor and delivery nursing while at SFA and has turned it into a successful career.
Anne James, BSN RN, Class of 2004
At SFA, you’ll never have to participate in clinicals alone. Our professors accompany and supervise students on the hospital floor as they tend to patients in the East Texas region. Our students go beyond observation and actually receive valuable hands-on training.
The Ed and Gwen Cole Simulation Laboratory includes a medical surgical area, a labor-and-delivery area, a nursery and neonatal area, a health-assessment lab, and an emergency room. Faculty members remotely operate a variety of low-, medium-, and high-fidelity mannequins to simulate any patient condition, including childbirth.
