Traffic accidents can be quite costly. That’s why Nevada traffic laws require that you provide a proof of financial responsibility when you driving on public roads. The laws are designed to ensure that every driver can compensate for property damages or any physical injuries that may result from a traffic accident. You must hold compulsory liability insurance if you are driving a motor vehicle on Nevada public roads.
The Insurance Verification Program
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles’ Insurance Verification Program (IVP) monitors and identifies uninsured vehicles. The DMV partners with most insurance vendors and has access to their records so they can confirm the existence of a valid insurance policy.
If your record indicates that you’ve dropped your insurance policy, you will be asked to verify your insurance. If you fail to do so, your car registration will be cancelled and the license plates will be recalled. Renewal of the registration will cost you $250 and you will be asked to provide a proof of financial responsibility before your new license plates can be issued.
Insurance Requirements in Detail
The current laws require that all motor vehicle liability insurance policies include a coverage minimum of $15,000 for bodily injury or death of one person; $30,000 for bodily injury or death or two or more persons in any one accident; and $10,000 for injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident. Coverage must be reported to the DMV by an authorized insurance vendor. You must also carry your Nevada Evidence of Insurance Card any time you drive a vehicle and present it to any law enforcement officer upon request. In case of your involvement in a traffic accident, you must provide insurance details to all other parties.
