Mount Dora Christian Academy President Dr. James Moore

MOUNT DORA Mount Dora Christian Academy unveiled its new $4.5 million sports complex on Friday, just in time for the first football game of the season against Legacy.

I m just mesmerized, said Dr. Brad Moser, head of school. It all seems surreal. Players walk on the field almost in disbelief at how amazing it is and we are like, We did this for you. This is your team. This is your field. It s an amazing opportunity we have here.

High-achieving Mount Dora musician lands coveted slot with U.S.

Mount Dora resident Arianna Beyer has achieved practically every goal she s ever set for herself.

From being named valedictorian of Douglas Anderson School of Arts in Jacksonville to winning numerous music competitions including the 2013 national United States Navy Band High School Concerto Competition to interning last year with the United States Army Band, the 22-year-old is tenacious when it comes to getting what she wants.

In May, just a mere five days after graduating from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with highest distinction, Beyer, a clarinetist, auditioned for and won an opening in the prestigious U.S. Navy Band, based in Washington, D.C., achieving yet another goal.

Mount Dora Seafood Fest: Shuckers and landlubbers

MOUNT DORA The third annual Mount Dora Seafood Festival Aug. 26 and 27 has grown since its inception with each year topping the last in size and attendance. This year promises to be the biggest and best yet.

Visit Mount Dora is the organization that created the seafood festival, said Janet Gamache, special event coordinator for Visit Mount Dora. We did it in order to highlight the Mount Dora Village Market, which was held in Evans Park. It was a way to kick up attendance and visibility of the Village Market. That first year it was just in Evans Park, but it was so popular we expanded it.

Safe Sitter Program – Florida Hospital Waterman

Safe Sitter program provides area youth with lifesaving and confidence building skills

Florida Hospital Waterman hosts national program to teach teens better babysitting practices

Empowering the community s youth, Florida Hospital Waterman will host their annual Safe Sitter classes July 27 and August 3. Nationally approved and recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Safe Sitter course is designed to teach boys and girls ages 11 through 13 to confidently and safely care for themselves and younger children when unsupervised. Six Safe Sitter certified instructors will lead the one- day programs. Students participating in the program will not only learn how to administer first aid, choking child rescue and CPR, but how to manage their own babysitting business as well.

The skills learned in this program are a true asset to our community s youth, said Mary Narmore, MSN-Ed, CMSRN, Manager of Education, Florida Hospital Waterman. After participating in Safe Sitter, students feel more confident caring for younger children and parents can rest at ease knowing their teens are prepared to handle emergencies.

The Safe Sitter program will be held July 27 and August 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. A graduation ceremony open to family and friends will conclude each of the one-day sessions. Program tuition is $50 per student, which includes snacks, CPR certification card, a Safe Sitter backpack, and other course-related materials.

Seeing the proud look on parents faces during the graduation ceremony is my favorite part of hosting Safe Sitter, said Debra Dudley, RN Certified Diabetes Educator BS, Florida Hospital Waterman. Parents know their kids have worked hard and will reap the benefits for years to come.

Space is limited and registration is required. Contact the Florida Hospital Waterman Education Department at (352) 253-3391 to register.
