There is a lot of anti-theft technology available for consumers. Today's devices and systems have never been as sophisticated and as advanced as they are now. An ongoing battle is taking place between the manufacturers and thieves. The problem for society in general is that the thieves also seem to stay ahead of the game somehow, regardless of the improvements made in anti-theft systems. What many not realize is that thefts often occur because the victim made it awfully easy for someone to steal their vehicles.

For example, a survey of auto theft victims found that nearly 80% of individuals lock their door every time. While this is obviously the majority, the bottom line is that 1 out of every 5 don't even bother to lock their car doors all the time.

This same survey also reported that almost 1 out of every 3 individuals have let their car running without being near it. This makes it incredibly easy for anyone to steal a vehicle.

If everyone locked their doors every time they left and never left their vehicles run without being around, think about how many thefts could be prevented. These victims could have installed the latest in anti-theft technology, but it didn't matter because they didn't lock the doors to their car. This is probably the easiest anti-theft prevention strategy out there, and it won't cost you a dime.

Another easy tip is to never leave your keys in your vehicle. It's been said that 1 out of every 5 car thefts occur while keys were in the vehicles.

Most car thefts occur at night, so parking your vehicle in a highly visible area certainly helps. Also, the more vehicles there are around, the better. Parking in an isolated spot where no one is around is putting yourself at greater risk. Next time you part somewhere at night, consider these factors.

If you want to make your car a little less attractive to steal, then hide any valuable items that you may have in it. Even if it's just a handful of CD's, don't underestimate just how much more interested a thief might be with these in sight. Hide them under a towel, a compartment, or even the trunk. This could be the difference between being a victim and not being one.

So while having a top of the line anti-theft system is beneficial, doing the obvious can go along way towards theft prevention.
