First - and foremost, try not to stress over your debt. I know, sometimes that's easier said than done. But please try. I promise, there are several things you can do to help reduce debt you just need to learn what they are.
Second - The best way to cope with a lot of debt is to become more thrifty. Remember, frugality is key now!
So, to this end set up a realistic budget and stick to it. It has to be realistic or you'll find yourself pilfering here and there to get those things you feel you need at the time. Cut costs where ever you can and determine the debt you wish to pay off first. Put the savings into paying just on that one debt to get it paid off completely.
Add this "savings" plan to your budget and determine a time frame when this debt will be paid off. You may want to choose the debt with the lowest balance or the one with the highest interest. Or you may choose based on some other criteria. Once this debt has been paid off your savings will increase and you will then be able to choose another debt which to pay off and you'll have more money with which to do it.
Third - Be creative and brainstorm some of the things that you or family members may be able to do in order to bring in some extra money. Evaluate talents you all may have and come up with some ideas that you can use to make some side money. Are you good at math or science and have a few hours a week to tutor a student? Is there a young man in the family who likes to detail the car? Do you have neighbors that are in need of babysitting? Is someone musically blessed and can teach young children an instrument? All these ideas and many more that you come up with can help you reduce debt.
Fourth - Seek help and compare any advice to your particular situation. If it seems like a good fit it would be best to consult an expert and discuss your situation. A consultant will know of several different ways to help you solve your debt problems.
Fifth - There's no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed. Many consumers who have slipped into debt tend to feel that way. We have been told all our lives that if we borrow we must pay back. Sometimes, it is just not possible to do so and we have tried to no avail. It can happen to anybody - especially in these economically stressful times. It is also likely that you know of some family members or friends who are in the same situation. Because it's true - you are not alone.
