Iranian, Iraqi Forces Are Manufacturing Rocket Launchers In Syria’s Deir Ezzor – Report

.

Forces affiliated with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) are manufacturing single barrel rocket launchers in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on June 4.

According to the London-based group, the launchers are being manufactured in a military base located in the outskirts of the government-held town of al-Mayadin in southern Deir Ezzor. Iranian military experts are present there.

“The manufacturing process started a few days ago, dozens of rocket launchers for Iranian-made surface-to-surface rockets have been made already,” the SOHR’s report reads.

IRGC-affiliated forces and PMU factions maintain a strong presence in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor in order to counter ISIS and guard the Syrian-Iraqi border.

Last month, a large Iranian weapons shipment arrived in the region coming from Iraq. The shipment contained “short-range” rockets, machine guns as well as ammunition.

The ongoing military buildup in southern Deir Ezzor is most likely directed against ISIS. The terrorist group’s cells launch attacks on western and southern Deir Ezzor on a regular basis. The terrorists also move along the Syrian-Iraqi border.
