Steps in Cleaning Engine Parts without Disassembling the Engine
The components making up your ride’s engine will work better when they are unsoiled. So besides changing the engine oil, you should also include cleaning the engine parts in your regular maintenance regimen.
Don’t worry. Cleaning the engine doesn’t always mean disassembling it and working with all the bits and pieces of the assembly. While it’s also important to clean them inside and out once in a while, that would take so much of your time. To help you up, here are the steps on how to clean your engine parts without disassembling the engine and taking the parts out of the engine bay:
What you’ll need:
- Dish soap
- Plastic bags/wrap
- Stiff-bristled brush
- Battery terminal puller
Step 1: Park the vehicle in an area away from children and pets. Place a large tarpaulin under and around the car and lay newspapers on top of the tarp. The paper will absorb oily water to prevent it from contaminating the soil or the nearby sewage system.
Step 2: Slightly warm up the engine by turning it on for a minute or two. Don’t let it reach its operating temperature.
Step 3: Disconnect the battery by first removing the negative terminal followed by the positive terminal.
Step 4: With a plastic wrap, cover all exposed electrical parts. If you own an older model, you also need to cover the carburetor and the air intake.
Step 5: Rid the engine surface of loose dirt and debris using the brush.
Step 6: Prepare your cleaning solution by mixing about 2 cups of dish soap to a gallon of water in a bucket.
Step 7: Get rid of oil and other stubborn dirt by scrubbing the engine parts using stiff-bristled brush and soapy water. Pay more attention to the filthiest areas.
Step 8: Connect the hose to the water source and rinse the engine. Remove the plastic wraps and allow the engine to dry. You can turn the engine on as this will make the water evaporate faster.
Step 9: Properly discard the newspapers that you’ve used to absorb the oily water from the engine.
