Economy Car Rentals won’t return my deposit
In April 2010, I booked a rental car through economycarrentals.com to collect at Dubrovnik airport from Sixt Cars. I paid a 70 deposit with a credit card, with the remainder (about 306) to be paid on collection.
When we arrived at the airport we were handed a pre-prepared slip by the Sixt representative, stating it did not have a car for us. After a good deal of stress and negotiation, I was eventually able to rent a car from a different company, at a higher cost, and I had to purchase expensive insurance on the spot.
I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get my 70 back from economycarrentals.com, which refuses to refund my deposit, claiming the rental from the firm I found was under its terms , although it had nothing to do with this hire. Can you help? RS, Harrogate, Yorks
A quick look on the internet suggests you are not the first holidaymaker who has had an unhappy experience with this company, and getting your money back turned into something of a saga.
We called and emailed the company, which has a UK phone number but is based in Greece. Unlike many of its customers on the web, who complain they never get replies, the company did respond. It reiterated that you would have been insured with the second company you hired from, although how you would have known this is anyone’s guess.
Finally, after a series of emails, economycarrentals says it has refunded the money to your credit card.
Potential customers would do well to read up about this firm before they make a booking.
