Many people come here for the excellent street performers that play in the square, ranging from buskers, to acrobats, magicians, opera singers and even a Santa’s Grotto during Christmas time when the Covent Garden Hotels become really popular.

The elegant Royal Opera House had the first ballet performed here in 1734 and Handel specifically wrote many of his operas for the venue. It has also been home to the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet for over sixty years.

St. Paul’s Church in Covent Garden also has strong ties to the theatre community. The first recorded performance of Punch and Judy took place here in 1662, as noted by the diarist, Samuel Pepys .
