Childcare more expensive than rent in Phoenix
PHOENIX (3TV) –
A recent study from the Economic Policy Institute claims childcare costs exceed rent in most cities, including right here in Phoenix.
The childcare part was very hard, raising the children and being in low-income housing, said Tracie Jones, who raised five children.
Jones’ kids are parents now.
I have four grandchildren, and most of the time the family watches them, Jones said.
That’s because she said she doesn’t want them to go through the same things she did.
A few times we had to go to shelters to help with our children, Jones said.
Like many public programs, there’s a limited amount of resources in many areas there are waiting lists, said Liz Barker Alvarez with First Things First .
First Things First has a website that helps families find affordable, quality care. Barker Alvarez said that last year her organization gave nearly 17,000 families scholarships for early education, but the community needs to do more to increase the amount of help available.
There’s public-private partnerships to expand scholarships, there are things businesses do to provide on-site childcare, Barker Alvarez said.
Jones said though she’d never put a price on her growing family, a little help to make ends meet couldn’t hurt.
I believe there should be more subsidies so people can go back to work, she said.
