NORWALK — A mother and son’s weekend effort to complete the “24-hour challenge” by staying up all night ended with the boy taken to a hospital and the mother under arrest.

Police said Nicole Barstow, 31, of Day Street, Norwalk, and her juvenile son stayed up all night Friday in an attempt to complete a home variation of the challenge, a viral trend among young people that began with a YouTube video two years ago. But, police said, by the morning the strain had begun to show in the mother.

By 10 a.m. Saturday, Barstow was seen in the lobby of her Day Street apartment building acting erratically, police said. Someone called 911 to report a woman causing a commotion. During her outburst, police said, Barstow smashed a large window at the front of the complex and littered the lobby with broken dishes, toys and children’s clothing.

When officers arrived Barstow appeared lethargic and was unable to answer any questions, police said. When they then checked her apartment, they found her son unresponsive. The boy was brought to a hospital where it was determined he was just exhausted from staying up all night.

Police said the apartment was in disarray, with dirty clothes and dishes strewn about.

Barstow also taken to the hospital, where she had a second run-in with police. During the incident, she tried to punch an officer but was restrained, police said. As she struggled to get free, she kicked another officer in the neck, police said.

Barstow was charged with assaulting a public safety officer, first-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and risk of injury to a child. She was held on a $200,000 bond and given a court date of Dec. 17.

The 24-hour challenge is a trend in which participants secretly spend the night at a business, such as Ikea or McDonald’s, undetected. It began with a YouTube video out of Belgium and has caused scares for parents in several countries.
