Food Lion was initially known as Food Town and was founded by Wilson Smith in the year 1957 in Salisbury, North Carolina. The name Food Lion was adopted in the year 1983. Food Lion expanded throughout Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States throughout the 80s. However, Food Lion was forced to delay their expansion plans in the 90s owing to decline in sales. More than two decades later, today, Food Lion operates 1300 stores in 11 states. Not much has changed for Food Lion as it is closing several stores owing to under-performance.
You can work as a Selector at a Food Lion distribution center, as far as entry-level positions are concerned. As a Selector, your responsibilities are to assemble store merchandise orders using voice and/or paper label method, assemble accurately and properly stack each order. You will be required to complete a 10-point daily inspection of equipment used. You will utilize the Labor Management System by keying in and out on assignment for each order selected and make sure labels are put on each case, ensuring accuracy. You will pull products from the front of the pallet so that proper rotation of product is maintained. You will identify each pallet with the correct store number to ensure that the orders are parked at the correct door for proper store delivery. For this position, you need to be able to bend, stoop and lift weights up to 100 lbs. You must be able to read and understand written and numeric product identifiers and must be able to operate efficiently and follow instructions relating to the use of Time clock and Labor Management System clock. You can also choose to work as a Switcher. As a switcher, your job is to move trailers into appropriate dock doors for loading and unloading of products for various departments, and products returning from retail stores. You will be required to complete yard audits within YMS using hand held computers. You will maintain running list of all common carrier trailers moved into doors during shifts. For this position, some facilities may demand a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. The candidate must be at least 21 years of age and the candidate must pass D.O.T physical and drug screen at facilities where a CDL is required. You must have clean driving record with 3 years or 300,000 miles experience. You must be willing to work in a -5 degree to 90+ degree Fahrenheit environment for long periods of time. Familiarity in a distribution environment is preferred.
