Uber limo service intros budget UberX to compete with Lyft

Uber , the luxury-taxi service renowned for its hail-a-ride app and its impeccable service, today is launching in the Twin Cities a lower-rent variant called UberX. Instead of Uber’s Lincoln Town Car- or SUV-style transport, available here for about a year, UberX relies on ordinary cars such as a Toyota Prius or a Honda Accord. UberX is less expensive than traditional taxis, but with more polish, Uber claims. If this sounds familiar, it’s possibly because you saw my coverage of rival service Lyft rolling out in St. Paul (but not Minneapolis) week. UberX, like Lyft, relies on average folks using their own cars and setting their own hours to earn extra cash. The service, like Lyft, also operates only in St. Paul for now, not in Minneapolis. That is, rides must originate in St. Paul, but can end anywhere in the Twin Cities. Uber is clearly feeling competitive pressure from Lyft. It is offering free rides this month. Newbie Lyft users may still be able to score a $20 credit with the coupon code “twincity” via the service’s app. Or try the “mspaul” coupon code for $10 off (hat tip, CNET). Twin Citians also can hail regular cabs via the iHail and Taxi Magic apps. Here’s how the various hail-a-ride-via-app services break down: UBER . The San Francisco-based service offers a range of app-based transportation choices, including luxury limo and SUV services along with a just-launched UberX for budget-minded clients. Uber in some cities also lets users hail traditional taxis via its app, but this option is not yet available in the Twin Cities. iPhone app | Android app LYFT . The San Francisco-based service recruits average citizens who use their own autos to pick up riders at hours they set with the company taking a cut of each fare. Lyft is notable for a magenta moustache all of its cars wear, and how drivers and riders fistbump each other upon meeting for the first time. iPhone app | Android app TAXI MAGIC . This service, operated by Alexandria, Va.-based RideCharge, offers hail-a-taxi services in more than 60 U.S. cities. In the Twin Cities, the Taxi Magic app summons cabs from Green and White Taxi, Suburban Taxi and others. RiderCharge also runs Sedan Magic, but only in New York and Washington, D.C. iPhone app | Android app iHAIL . New Hope-based Taxi Services launched this service with app and dispatch-system technology from Australia’s MTData. The iHail app will summon cabs from Taxi Service’s Airport Taxi, Town Taxi and Yellow Cab. Like the other apps, iHail pinpoints users’ GPS coordinates and sends the nearest car. iPhone app | Android app Posted September 5, 2013 by Julio Ojeda-Zapata
